01:05

over the world and 250 cities Nationwide and over 5 000 portfolio companies their goal is 80 of the portfolio will work on four progress businesses that align with the United Nations’ sustainable development goals which are awesome today um Adeo is the CEO of BC lab We'll talk a little bit about that in a moment but the goal of VC lab is to

01:27

help launch and grow a thousand Next Generation Venture Capital firms worldwide by 2025 which includes Suncoast Ventures VC lab asks every Venture firm it works to publicly support an ethical code of conduct for investment professionals which is really cool we've done that Adeo himself has launched 14 VC funds and founded 11

01:46

startups he's had two billion in exits before the age of 30. he previously served on the board of the X prize Foundation which is in space exploration he studied architecture he has dove into different ways to design better worlds and ways to live all focused on aspiring people to achieve their potential and

02:08

live a better life and create a better world so Adeo welcome to adventurous thank you for having me and let's not forget I'm wearing super fancy headphones just for you he's got super happy just for me I'm very appreciative of That So Daniel would you like to share a little bit about what's going on with VC lab before

02:28

we dig in and just some of the incredible growth and traction and impacts that you're creating over there yeah so we saw a problem in the world that most of Humanity did not have access to professional venture capital and it that doesn't seem to make that big of a difference in the whole scheme of things right A lot of people don't

02:54

have access to food and you would argue that's more important but if you start thinking about what you want the world to look like in the future you don't want every single great company coming from one place like Silicon Valley you want great companies that are changing the world coming from everywhere and the

03:12

reality is that unicorns and big companies are highly correlated to areas where there are thriving Venture Capital markets and right now there's only a handful of those markets worldwide, so we started VC lab to grow Venture Capital ecosystems all around the world allowing new managers like yourself to launch funds

03:36

that have a shot at changing the world in an area that they're focusing on whether it be medicine or health Tech or a region whether it be Central Asia latam and really give a life to entrepreneurs all around the world through the funding that Venture provides and we're seeing the results of this every day now we've

04:01

tripled the number of funds on the continent of Africa that's going to have profound consequences for all of Africa because Africa is in a position for example where it may not have the technology of the developed Nations but it has the opportunity to LeapFrog and actually do things that develop big Nations or

04:29

developed Nations only wish they could so for example landlines were never really rolled out in most of Africa because it leapfrogged that and went right to mobile there's leapfrobok opportunities in food production all across Africa there's LeapFrog opportunities today in healthcare all across Africa so I think

04:51

a thriving Venture Capital Market in Africa will allow the innovators to make those LeapFrog opportunities into reality and bring a great deal of prosperity to places that can really benefit from it I totally agree in fact I just made my first African Health type deal this week so congrats very excited about it but

05:15

you know so I have a question for you a lot of this that we do and this that you do you've been an entrepreneur for a while it's not easy it's definitely the hard path in The Road Less Traveled to build and create things launch things from nothing and create something you could live an easier life you really could

05:36

you know and you can kind of forget about all of this like make the world a better place you could give it lip service you could write great LinkedIn posts and great articles about how much you care about things and then you could do nothing about it and that's what most people do why are you actually getting up every

05:53

day and your feet hitting the floor and you're why are you doing it we're at a turning point in humanity and you know it's been pretty clear to me that this is the case since a young age and as I've grown older I've realized that lip service is not enough right you have to at least I feel that I have to take action and not

06:19

just do lip service so I've been aware since a young age that problems were abound in the world and as I've grown older you know I've decided to take greater and greater agency in fixing them to the point now where I just don't assume that any problem is being fixed unless I am personally working on it and

06:40

I am personally working on it as an individual and as a career both so if I'm not like you know reducing my carbon emissions personally then carbon emissions aren't being reduced as far as I'm concerned now of course that doesn't mean no one else is working on problem I'm sure I'm sure lots of people are working on the

07:04

problem but I mean for me taking the steps to change the world begins personally and professionally and until I am personally working on it and professionally and working on it I do not assume that progress is being made anymore because I think a lot of people do pay lip service to and do choose the easier life and so

07:25

they say hey look there's you know there are lots of problems in the world and you know there's greenhouse gases and there's climate change and all this stuff and yet they sit down and they eat a lot of meat in fact they'll eat probably three or four types of meat in a day right maybe bacon for breakfast a

07:45

hamburger for lunch and then you know something else chicken for dinner Etc and you know that is one of the largest causes of climate change and greenhouse gases right there and so meanwhile they're saying hey you know I really think that this is a problem okay great yet they're doing it they're

08:08

contributing to that problem firsthand in how they eat so yo I again don't take at this point as I said I don't take anything that anyone says for granted in fact I don't even if I validate that they're doing something I still don't take it for granted it for me it doesn't get done unless I am doing it and I'm working on

08:31

it and and and done for me means that we've really fixed the things that I'm addressing personally and addressing professionally and we're a long way from that so when you're in a conversation okay you're in San Francisco you're in the Silicon Valley right you tend to be around people who are a little bit more

08:55

Progressive forward-thinking more imaginative but then how would you what would you say when you're sitting in a wood paneled board broom with a bunch of Executives who are you know aren't going to get there on that how do you cross that Gap what kind of story would you tell them either for yourself or just

09:18

even as an entrepreneur about the need to invest or the need to get involved in the need to change their very ingrained systemic processes and behaviors to do this because they're not going to well you know I I I wouldn't really waste my time you know that doesn't sound like a good use of time

09:41

right you the only thing that you have is time right that's it and then so if that's the only thing that you have then the next thing that you really only have is how you choose to spend that time so I do watch some television you know it's not the best I'll generally watch it while I'm working out and

10:03

I'll watch like docudramas or documentaries primarily or things that I find interesting that align with My Views as a means to relax so that's about the biggest single thing that I do that might not be the most time optimized but other than that I I pretty much the way that I allocate my time is I spend it on the things that at the

10:28

moment feel like the most important thing that I can do to move the needle forward on my agenda and and because again the only thing that you really have is time you know allocating your time to the things that matter most is one of the most effective things that you can do to to make progress on your goals and objectives

10:54

and so if sitting in front of a people a group of people that you know really aren't open to the message that I may have or you know are set in their ways and going to do things you know there's no point there's no point in that like it's not a great use of my time so generally speaking the way I look at that type of

11:16

scenario is I try as best as I can within what is reasonable to embody the values and beliefs that I have personally and so I am a lighthouse then secondly I try to build organizations that embody the values and beliefs that I have as well for the mission of that organization and then those organizations try to be a

11:46

lighthouse as well around these issues so and then because we are a lighthouse the right people the like-minded people come and rally around these beacons and they and then as a result instead of trying to like preach to people who will never believe if you will you're working with people who are

12:13

vision and Mission aligned to achieve a important objectives and then you know there are always going to be people who don't believe what you believe in and that's fine I'm not saying they should and it's not really my job to convince them to believe in what I believe in it's if they're serious grave

12:33

issues in the world they need to be fixed and those are the things I'm working on and whether you believe they need to be fixed or not you know that's you know if you believe they need to be fixed you probably should be working with us and if you don't believe they need to be fixed we're going to fix them

12:55

anyway right and like so what you said I think is really hits at the core of I think a lot of the message around adventurous as well as a lot of I think what has driven us at Suncoast which is the concept of the lighthouse now I don't call it the lighthouse but you know I'd like to know from you so you probably didn't always have this

13:16

wisdom about the lighthouse and how that draws the people towards you and the power that it has when you embody that to create so I'm curious what may what occurred for you was there a moment when you realized how powerful that really was versus going after stuff that wasn't going to yield you what you wanted

13:40

saying rather than pursue I'm going to draw in by being lighthouse well you know I I it's not so much I don't know if I would phrase it as pursue versus draw in I think the lighthouse starts from within so if you are not aligned with what you want to do it's very hard for you to be a beacon even within your own organization and

14:12

certainly for others right so it starts with the lining from within and this is not a journey, not a destination so I would say that I try always to be thoughtful on the small and large things as small as the thoughts that cross my mind and as large as the actions that I take in the world

14:37

to make sure that these things are in alignment with my values and beliefs and there's always situations where you find in hindsight maybe you made a compromise you were not aware of or maybe you made a compromise you were aware of and it was a bigger compromise than you thought and that that definitely happens and so I I also try

14:58

to unwind those situations when they do but it all begins with yourself and if you're in alignment with your values and beliefs then everything else will start to fall in alignment and then you become the lighthouse so the lighthouse is not I'm gonna be a lighthouse it's like ah let me you know do all these things

15:20

it's you are a lighthouse when you yourself are aligned with your values and beliefs and then that manifests with your organization will become in alignment with your values and beliefs and then the people around your organization Etc will also then start to align with your values and beliefs and

15:42

and here's the thing you can't hide anything there is no hiding your values and beliefs flow from within and there are parts of every person that come from the world around them that are definitely not in alignment with your values and beliefs right unfortunately and that that is child and there's some things about your

16:07

personality that you keep secret sometimes even from yourself but certainly from others and you know when the more you bring all those things into alignment the greater a lighthouse you will become and the more aligned you will be the more aligned your organizations will be the more aligned the people that you work with are Etc

16:31

and again it's not a destination this is a journey because right as you because we're always ever evolving and we're living in an ever-changing world many of the people who listen to this podcast are investors their VCS they're entrepreneurs and I have heard specific questions from many of these people how

16:51

do you achieve alignment that is the Holy Grail and so you know I think some people just oftentimes they don't even know where to start they feel out of alignment they might notice they're not in the flow of Life they're not in the business is in the flow the way it should be or there maybe they're just

17:10

not feeling the passion or the happiness that they'd like to be feeling so if you came across one of those people what would you tell them about how where do you even start to find the Holy Grail of being aligned you know I again alignment's not a destination it's a journey so you you can start at any point to the Journey

17:33

of alignment and the Knowing yourself well I don't know it's there's a difference between knowing yourself and Alignment right and so you can know yourself really well and that does not mean that you're in alignment and there have been times where I'm even recently where I'm out of alignment there are

17:58

times even recently where I'm more in alignment so the first thing the first step on that Journey though is to set the intention that you want to be in alignment and you know it's possible you don't want to be in alignment so maybe that's not the intention but if you do want to be in alignment then the

18:18

first thing to do is set the intention that you are going to be in alignment or be on a journey to be in alignment and once that intention is set the next step is to start to understand what the values and beliefs that you have are that you want to go into alignment with and this is in and of itself a fairly complicated Journey

18:44

because there's lots of things you could be in alignment with there's a lot of demand for materiality today but that is a very superficial sense so you could say oh I want to be really wealthy and I would argue that wealth and happiness are inversely correlated so if a lot of people assume well if I'm if I'm

19:10

wealthy I'll be happy because I spend so much time worrying about money right and let's just unpack that in the alignment context because everything in that phrase was just wrong so if you're worrying about money you're sending out energy into the world where you're associating wealth

19:34

with worry right so right there that you're out of alignment in that very sentiment that you have which is worrying about money m and there are lots of times where I look at my bank account or whatever and it's easy to worry about money but the second you start worrying about money you are moving out of alignment

19:59

with having money because the worrying of the worrying part associating that with money will probably lead to an outcome where you don't have the money you need you you're you have issues with money Etc so just making sure that you set your sense of what your what alignment is for you and what you want

20:25

to achieve is very important in being very careful about it so again worrying about money is one that a lot of people have so a lot of people feel that money is in fact alignment I would argue that money flows from alignment and money is not the goal of alignment in fact I would argue that any statement

20:49

about financial success is in an outcome and not an objective because then you're worrying and thing and it just is not the way you're going to get there so the things that tend to matter I find when you're successful in defining an alignment objective if you will, tends to be around identifying

21:17

your purpose and again this everyone has their own purpose it can be informed by things that happened in your childhood things that are happening in the world today and it you have a natural reaction to be drawn towards things and sometimes those things can make you angry sometimes it can make you happy

21:44

but the more you're drawn to something the more that is a sign that that is related to your purpose and absolutely agree with that because I feel like your desire is there for a reason it it wasn't put in you by accident there's a reason that I desire certain things and don't desire other things and it's because I meant to do

22:07

the things if you know within alignment for me that I truly desire and sometimes when I don't when I'm when something's not occurring for me when I go really really kind of Within Myself I realize I don't actually want the thing I think that I want you know and it might be a limiting belief it might be because I'm out of

22:27

alignment or sometimes it's that I'm just told that I should want that and I really don't and then when it's not occurring for me oftentimes it's because I don't actually want the thing that I think I should want and so I I now see when I'm running into struggles as a sign that's saying where am I out of

22:49

alignment where am I where am I believing something that's maybe not true or maybe where am I doing something because someone else thinks I should be rather than saying why is this not working you know looking at externally versus internally there's a lot of blockages right the blockages are often within you and not within the

23:12

world so if you're not if you're feeling out of alignment and you're not achieving the things that you think you should be achieving you know the first thing is to understand as I said what alignment is for you and then because a lot of times you may have a wrong sense of what alignment is it's

23:34

financially motivated whatever and then once you have that set there you have to understand how you are getting in your own way and the easiest thing to do is just to really be very conscious about your thoughts right it's so it's really easy to say oh you know this is too hard or that's stupid or

24:02

I don't like you know I'm an idiot or you know and no those are all negative things that prevent you from achieving alignment and a lot of us are taught to think that way that someone else's fault or you know if this isn't being done right or whatever and really that's you gotta just

24:29

let that if you feel these negative thoughts or kind of faux causalities like it's not my fault it's someone else's fault or you know this can't be possibly done you gotta just stop that right and because it's in your head and a lot of times as you were saying if you're trying to do something and you're running into roadblock after

24:59

roadblock I find that it's either one of two things either you are if putting a blockage in your own way to achieve whatever that objective is and that I would say is most of the time and then in the other time you just set the wrong objective right you're going after the wrong thing and you're getting

25:25

feedback that it's the wrong thing and you're just not listening because you're stubborn so you know if you've set the thing right and you're not achieving it it's definitely within you if you've not said it right you're not listening to the feedback from the world that it's you're going in the wrong

25:47

direction you have a lot of wisdom and I'm pretty sure you weren't born just wise if you could look back on your journey I mean I'm sure you were born wise but they're if you could look back on your journey over the past you know 20 years let's say was there a specific experience that you had that kind of LED

26:14

you into this realm of knowledge and understanding that many people don't yet have a lot of people are starting to kind of dabble in it or sort of get it like I think my thoughts affect things more than I think what was that like for you to come sort of to that Discovery and begin to create Mastery within yourself on that topic

26:35

I'm certainly not I think there's other levels of Mastery far beyond where I am and you know I've seen evidence of it and you know the problem is that not any of this stuff is really well documented in a traditional sense so you have some spiritual guidance if you will that at times can

27:09

be kind of unapproachable because it seems incredulous or kind of kooky if you will and then so so there's a there's definitely lessons through good lessons in some of the things that seem both incredulous and kind of unusual and then but in terms of traditional it's almost a dead end in terms of

27:36

traditional learning and knowledge about this you know in a university context or you know not going to the awkward bookstore but going to more of a true You're not going to find a lot of information on the internet Etc so it really is Unfortunately today a journey that a lot of people have to go

27:58

on their own and so for me, it's the more you start to unlock the more that becomes unlocked, and then the only thing that really limits your journey to understanding is yourself so if you sort of rip the Band-Aid off and say okay I'm gonna just try and learn as much as possible about

28:25

how to get into alignment about how to set objectives for myself and really be open to as many lessons as possible you'll progress very fast because the feedback machine is infinite so the first thing that I would say as a means of progress is to start listening to the feedback because

28:54

you are getting feedback all of the time on everything that you do large and small every thought that you have every action that you take you are getting feedback and sometimes that feedback is Extreme it could be like extreme resistance extreme pushing back and sometimes times it's very subtle right it could be that

29:18

you know maybe you know the car didn't start the first time you tried or you know you missed the meeting by a few minutes or something so you got to be listening to the feedback that you're getting and trying to interpret what lessen that feedback has for you about how you can grow and further come into alignment and

29:44

for most people who are early on the journey they're not getting subtle feedback right they're getting cancer and they're getting you know fired and they're getting you know they're getting the hardest divorce yeah you know yeah yeah family deaths four in a row in two months lost everything yeah yeah a rough

30:11

attorney for me yeah yeah the initial initial initial if you're that far off path usually an out of alignment the initial set of feedback is rather it's punched in the face you're gonna get punched in the face sadly but even when you're getting punched in the face you are also getting less severe feedback as well

30:36

about different things where you may be more in alignment so you may be a great parent in a bad marriage and the marriage that's like going from bad to worse but your parenting which is going pretty good you're getting feedback there too it's just not as severe as the marriage feedback and so you

30:56

know being attuned to the fact that you're getting feedback all the time about your state of alignment from every little thing and I can make that feedback very easy for people to understand it when you do something is it getting resistance meaning people are sort of like you're trying to go this way and

31:24

it's not happening or is it flowing very easily and if you're getting resistance it's a really good sign that you're out of you're doing something either out of alignment or so it could be that you're doing it in in an incorrect way or the objective is wrong yeah if and now I would say the severity

31:48

of the feedback is a pretty big indicator so if it's like whoa this is really hard and it's not feeling all that rewarding there's something that you need to adjust address yeah and but if it's happening it listen and let's talk about hard pretty much everything we need to do right now is hard

32:16

there's where we've crossed a Chasm where that we can no longer turn the ship without hard doing a lot of hard things doing something hard yeah maybe because we're in the slap in the face moment we have gone so far off path as a society that we as a collective on the planet are getting a collective slap in

32:48

the face and that's coming in the form of everything I mean extreme climate events everywhere at this point habitat and species loss you know we have a mental illness at a High extremely high rate addiction doubled it double digit mental illness rates we have double-digit rates of autism and other things in

33:17

children I mean it we are getting like loud signals and the problem is generally speaking in my experience and I'm not saying that I'm I have all the right answers here until you listen the feedback only gets louder and louder usually isn't louder in a nice way it's like louder and you get cancer or louder and you die right and

33:45

so we're at like louder and the cancer level right now as a society which is why I said earlier that for me like unless I am working on it and I am seeing progress made I do not believe that the progress is in fact being made because the signals are so loud in the world of our alignment that it's it's

34:14

you know there's a lot of work to be done yeah I think I think that's actually very profound because you can look at that as a society and some people will have a hard time relating to that on a global view but then it distills right down to and on a daily the patterns are the same I guess as a super inner way of

34:36

me saying it they operate and so once you can start to recognize the pattern you can start to say this is something that almost occurs in a formulaic fashion and well if you're unhappy driving to work and you're unhappy at your work and you don't and like right there you know you need to quit right now

35:01

right you're getting feedback that and I'm not saying all work is filled with happiness but if you're routinely truly unhappy yeah on this thing well and then all this stuff happens so then you drink right then you take frivolous vacations you probably abuse yourself in other ways right like whatever it be and

35:31

and you know that that becomes a vicious cycle in your life and you know eventually, you'll get sick and you know eventually you'll pass away and that's really so it starts with you and the signals are like are you working on something that's bringing you fulfillment and making you happy every

35:54

The day it's an easy one and if you're not just quit like it's not gonna you know no amount of money is worth the torture to yourself and the destruction that you're wielding in the world by being out of alignment because when you're out of alignment it's like a domino effect well yes for us to

36:22

everything back into alignment we don't all need to be in alignment but we can't all be out of alignment right so a lot of us need to be in alignment and maybe some of us can be out of alignment but right now it's the 90 10 where 90 is out of alignment 10 is in alignment and we need to flip that where

36:47

it's 90 are in alignment and 10 are out of alignment and then there are questions about what you do with the 10 that are out of alignment because most of the time humanity is not treated people very well that that do not subscribe to their beliefs structures and I believe that that is a deeply troubling problem that we need

37:10

to come up with much better answers because right now some of the most out-of-alignment people are running Society they're in power yes and they're the leaders of democracies because it makes total sense like if the population is out of alignment you almost are like my superhero is the

37:31

most out of alignment person possible because I myself are out of alignment they then become the leaders that build the society further out of alignment and the cycle just repeats continues and continues oh so there's a lot here I want to try to leave our listeners our adventurers as we call them with a

38:02

final piece of wisdom or call to action and you know I mentioned earlier to you so many people come to me saying basically how do I get into alignment and you mentioned too it's a little bit of a search it's a little bit of a journey and you know it's you're not going to find it on the traditional

38:19

paths being open to but being open to questioning and discovering and becoming curious about what is and opening your eyes to the feedback you're getting what final words of wisdom would you have for our listeners about this path this Pursuit and the journey that we are all on you know we talked about setting

38:45

intentions we talked about listening to the feedback that you're getting from the world about the different things that you're doing it can be small from like not being able to start the car or large to getting cancer or getting a divorce with all the above but you know the thing that I would say that it that was an

39:07

an interesting lesson for me that really help Define my own journey in some important ways is that once you start listening and at first really I would just advise you to listen but you're actually in a conversation with the universe if you will it's not a one-way feedback mechanism it's not like okay listen

39:37

listen listen and do exactly everything that's and then get the outcome you hope to get and then you're like I was right it doesn't yeah well so it's it it's a conversation so I call it a conversation with the universe and that you are getting feedback on things to help you get more in alignment

39:58

but you can also do things and and and and and essentially converse with that dot and have a dialogue about what alignment is and you can shape what alignment is and then that is a very interesting situation as well because you have much more agency so it's essentially the beginning of an understanding of what

40:31

your agency is in the dialogue around alignment and what that can mean for the greater good and it can have bad consequences where you know maybe you have Ambitions or goals or things that bring you in alignment that might be adverse to the world it can have good consequences and it's so that's a very interesting thing

40:59

and I've seen a lot of situations with people that I believe are deeply in alignment that have had some pretty bad consequences in the world and so being extremely thoughtful about how you engage in that conversation and what the effects of that can be positive I think it an important

41:24

thing as you progress in your ability to be aware of what your agency is the conversation Etc and I would add one last point so we're at the beginning of a great period of Awakening for Humanity possibly more awakened than we've ever been because we do live in a world of abundance that we've never been in

42:01

before so we're no longer a victim of the circumstance we're becoming aware and I believe that will provide a really beautiful moment of transcendence for Humanity where we're no longer bound by the many rules that we've thought governed our existence for long periods and it's going to

42:28

come on our own it's going to come in combination with a lot of the technology that we're developing but we will have some of the greatest agency in this Transcendence period that Humanity has ever had to influence outcomes at Scales that might seem unimaginable at this moment and so I think it's it's a

42:53

really beautiful time and a thoughtful time where we can claim the agency that is ours to have and do so responsibly and beautifully to build things that are really impactful in a positive way up in this world and Beyond that's beautiful there's a quote I don't want to go into it but one of my favorite quotes is for

43:21

such a time is this and it has a whole history too it comes from the Bible which I know is very unpopular to quote the Bible but it's from The Book of Esther but anyway I want to thank you so much to Deo for your time for coming on here today to share your wisdom with our listeners and

43:43
